Originally from Lakey Peak on Sumbawa, Westen Hirst is an uber talented 16-year-old goofyfoot that now resides in Bali. If you’ve been to Bali in the last few years, you’ve certainly seen Hirst ruling the local lineups alongside budding young stars like Varun Tanjung and Bronson Meydi. From packing big barrels at Padang to spinning stylish full rotes at Nyang Nyang, Hirst turns heads. He’s one of the most talented young surfers coming up in Indonesia right now.
Unfortunately, Hirst was in a bad motobike accident in Bali last week, which sent him to the ICU, where he’s currently in stable condition.
“As some of you may know my talented and wonderful nephew Westen Hirst was involved in a motorcycle accident in Bali (his home country) last week,” writes Hirst’s aunt on a givealittle page she created to help Hirst and his family with their mounting medical bills.
“Westen has been in ICU for 5 days in a hospital in Bali. He is in a stable condition now and being moved to a general room. Westen, has suffered internal injuries therefore needing many scans, tests and an up and coming surgery. As there is no health cover in Bali and unfortunately Westen’s insurance only covers partial parts of his medical bills, the bills are accumulating as he receives the treatment needed to make a full recovery.
“Westen, will be in hospital for sometime and with the mounting financial costs it is putting pressure on his Dad and Mum in an already stressful time. It is hard to estimate the total cost of his treatment as it is ongoing at this stage.”
