At least 8 bodies were found this weekend on the shores of Black’s Beach, one of the best waves in San Diego County, after the capsizing of an alleged smuggling boat.
According to NBC San Diego, SDFD Lifeguards received a phone call just before midnight on Saturday from a Spanish-speaking woman who was on a panga with 8 other people that made it to shore. Another boat carrying 15 people had capsized and people were struggling in the water.
By the time lifeguards and officials got to the scene–a difficulty given the high tide at the time–eight deceased bodies were found. No other survivors were found on the scene and no descriptions or information has been released about the victims, nor about what caused the accident.
“This is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California, certainly here in San Diego,” said SDFD Lifeguards Chief James Gartland.
