What a serene scene.
When you think of San Francisco, surfing probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. Although the city is known for its skate spots, this clip, posted by @hunterjones_, has changed our minds about the city’s potential for catching breaks.
Check out the video below of some people paddling out at Ocean Beach, which happens to be perched in the shadow of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This would make an excellent promo for luring more surfers to San Fran.

Although this looks like a unicorn moment, when the conditions are just right and the swell is hitting, surfers can find breaks to ride under the well-known bridge. In addition, many users in the comments section were blown away by seeing someone riding out in this unusual location. “Watching people do this when I was there looked so scary,” admitted @the_last_thing_u_forget, asking, “How do you not hit the rocks?” Another user, @freshcrunchyapple, noted that there were “too many rocks” but that the spot met the vibe check.
While the waves are unfortunately hitting sub-par standards, there’s no doubt there’s an element of novelty to surfing this spot. According to locals, the surf tends to break at the mouth of the San Francisco Bay. As a result, surfers tend to be hastily dropped onto the craggy shoreline.
The break also combines ocean swell and wakes from nearby tankers. In addition, a problematic undertow causes issues for those attempting to surf.
However, despite the unfavorable conditions, you likely won’t have much competition from fellow surfers if you tackle this location. As you can see in the clip, the group was practically alone as they took in their serene environment. Unfortunately, however, we can’t say precisely how you get to the specific shoreline, but this group seemed to execute perfectly.
