She’s pretty sure karma came back to haunt her.
Even 7x World Champ Layne Beachley gets a good dose of humility every now and then. In this instance, the Aussie legend was knocked down a few pegs by her good mate and fellow legend, Kelly Slater.
As you’ll see in the clip below, posted by @laynebeachley, Beachley described how Slater invited her to catch some breaks on his wave pool in California. It’s a nice glimpse into the pair’s cheeky albeit competitive nature with one another and makes us admire them even more.

We can’t really blame Beachley for getting a bit cocky. As she reminded us, she won six consecutive world titles between 1998 and 2003. There’s no doubt she’s a rockstar. Heck, we’d probably do the same if we were in her shoes.
However, she admitted that karma “instantly” hit her in the face once she paddled out and saw just how advanced the technology was at the 11x World Champ’s pool. According to the New South Wales native, she ended us missing six waves that day, and Slater did not intend to let her forget it. But at least she could wash away the embarrassment with alcohol.
Users in her comments were also happy to get the anecdote about the iconic pair’s friendly competition. “Great story. You should always be able to roust Slater. He’s a surfer and can take it with a smile,” admired @unifiedyouth. They added, “I’d say you need to show up with tequila next time,” referencing the six margaritas Slater served her as a consolation prize.
In addition, it seemed like fellow Aussies were proud of Beachley for having the courage to have a back-and-forth with Slater. For instance, @meags013 wrote, “You’re such a great Aussie ambassador. Tongue and cheek at all times,” describing her cheeky comments as “the Aussie way.”
While we can’t say when Beachey will return to Slater’s freak of technology for a go at redemption, you gotta love Beachley’s banter and her humility.
