The clip, which has since racked up over half a million likes, garnered tons of praise from viewers— many of whom expressed their amazement at the video
“What a magical moment,” penned @arlyn531. “Imagine if that happened to you,” wrote @fancylikegracie. She added, “I would remember that for the rest of my life.”
Whether dolphins are curiously coming to the surface for a quick peek, following a boat’s wake, or leaping into the sky next to fellow human swell-riders, humans have always been in awe of them.
According to some dolphin experts, these genius marine mammals ride the waves for social interaction and communication. In addition, some researchers theorize that waves can also help them eliminate parasites trapped in their flesh. So while we can’t confirm if the creatures are riding surf for pure bliss, there’s no doubt they have the intelligence to track and ride waves like humans.
The animals can also swim up to 25-miles-per-hour and can dive down some 900 feet into the water. So, it’s safe to say they have no problem keeping up with you while riding a break.
Although it’s unclear if this particular dolphin was swimming solo or with its pod, the people in the water that day had one killer story to tell when they got home.
