Back in his heyday, Travis Logie was a heavyweight on the Championship Tour.
But today, even though he still works for the World Surf League, his days in the jersey are over. The South African-born surfer now lives in Los Angeles, where he can often be spotted surfing the region’s subpar slop with the rest of us mere mortals.
And recently, he even changed up his equipment to ride the go-to craft for lots of SoCal surfers: the soft-top. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right?
“I’ve never surfed a soft-top in my entire life,” Travis admits.
Shocker: Travis still rips the thing to shreds.
“It was actually super fun,” Travis said after the session. “I was going a lot faster than I was on any other equipment. Unless you’re trying to be a full QS warrior contest guy, your best options are a fish or a longboard or something like this.
“It surpassed my expectations by quite a bit. I never really got the soft-top thing, to be honest. But now I totally get it. On a day like today, this is by far the best option.”
Brad Jacobson, longtime LA-based surf filmer, captured the session on camera. And he captioned his video as such:
“There’s no denying that the soft-top surfboard demand is growing in the line-up. At first I thought it was just a fad that would soon fade away, but it’s doing just the opposite. Recently, the team at South Bay Surf Co. reached out to see if I wanted to test a soft-top. I figured this would be a great time to see what the craze is all about, and I had the perfect person to test it out on… Travis Logie.”
As for whether or not, Travis is converted?
“I’m joining the cult!” he laughed.
