Jeff Spicoli, as immortalized onscreen by Sean Penn in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High, is one of Hollywood’s most iconic portrayals of the stereotypical stoner surfer.
And while many of Spicoli’s catchphrases are still recited by legions of fans today – “Hey bud, let’s party!” – there’s another scene from the film that’s perhaps even more eternally ingrained in the pop culture zeitgeist: the pool scene.
In a new advertisement for surf-adjacent hard kombucha brand, JuneShine, North Shore big-wave surfer Nathan Florence and his wife Mahina (daughter of North Shore heavy, Kai “Kaiborg” Garcia) recreated that legendary scene.
For a little context, the original scene went down like this: Brad Hamilton (played by Judge Reinhold) has a steamy fantasy about his younger sister’s friend, Linda (played by Phoebe Gates), while he’s spying on her in the pool. The scene, or rather the fantasy seen in the character Brad’s head, is one of those iconic film moments that continues to be referenced decades after its release.
In the original scene, Linda says, “Hi Brad. You know how cute I always thought you were.”
But in Nate’s version, Mahina says, “Hello Nathan. You know how good I always thought you surfed.”
Check out the original scene below:
Spot on. Nate and Mahina nailed it.
As it turns out, JuneShine has strong surfing roots. The wildly popular hard kombucha company recently shared a video explaining their origin story. It started from two surfers in San Diego looking for a healthier alternative to cheap beer. Thus, JuneShine was born. See the origin story below:
