Snapper Rocks has been absolutely cooking lately. And while the curated clips of 10 second tubes are satiating (See: Patrick Gudauskas below), the reality is, they shouldn’t be.
Because for the everyday surfer, it’s impossible to get one of those waves.
Unless your name is Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, or Dean Morrison, your chances of getting a bomb behind the rocks is slim to none. Because after those three have picked the best sets, there’s a rabid group of gold coast locals sitting just behind them, followed by another rung of pros, up-and-coming pros, 200 groms (literally), and then a pack of international travelers that all bought the Snapper dream, only to have it crushed when they realize they have zero chance of getting the wave flew around the world for. The Superbank crowds are that out of control.
So much so, even 14-year-old Quincy Symonds got faded on a wave she waited hours and hours to catch. Just an absolutely brutal burn. There’s no excuse for this type of thing in surfing. (See below)
For more proof of the madness, click play below. Count how many drop-ins are in this 3 minute clip. Watch how many surfers are in the face of every wave. And then imagine yourself paddling out, fighting the current, battling the crowd, and actually catching a wave.
Yeah, it’s probably not gonna happen. So while it’s fun to dream about the Superbank, the reality is that it’s best to book your next surf trip somewhere far, far away.
