Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We sound like a broken record. Snapper has been absolutely pumping; it’s been crowded; there’s been drop-ins; there’s been some good wipeout reels; and did we mention that it’s been completely cranking? Yeah, we did. Glad we’re on the same page.
But this time, we’ve got something special – the recent run of swell through the eyes of the Gold Coast’s golden child, Mick Fanning. (Oh, and Kelly Slater shows up, too.)
“Yeah, it was fun,” says Mick about the swell. “It was the first one that wasn’t blown out. We had a couple swells at the start of the year that had really high expectations, but nothing really happened. This one, we had two or three days right at the start that were just really, really dreamy. No wind. Picture perfect.
“The first part of it was like an East, Southeast swell. At the start it was really dreamy and picturesque. All the focus was on Snapper. The bank behind the rock was up there with as good as I’ve ever seen it. It didn’t matter, high tide or low tide, the bank was…amazing.”
And about Kelly? Does he have GOAT privileges at a place like Snapper?
“He sits in the lineup just like everyone else. I think everyone is pretty stoked to see him out there. I guess people, you know, when the GOAT starts paddling for a wave, people pull back.”
And how ‘bout them crowds?
“It’s Snapper. [Laughs.] It’s always crowded. It doesn’t matter if it’s one-foot or six-foot. If you don’t like the crowd, then I’m sorry. You just have to deal with it.”
