Surfing can be scary when you’re just starting out.
The ocean is a powerful place, which can spark fear. There’s other surfers, who can be intimidating in the lineup. And then, there’s all the critters that live in the sea, too.
So, it’s understandable that this five-year-old surfer was a bit spooked after catching a wave, and seeing a shark beneath the surface as he rode towards shore.
The clip comes from The Bucket List Family, a family of five who “decided to sell everything and leave home for a journey around the world together.” They’ve since set up a homebase in Hawaii, but continue to travel the world…91 countries and counting.
Anyway, back to the shark.
In the video, Papa Bucket List (Garret) pushed his five-year-old son (Cali) into a wave near their home in Hawaii, and here’s the description of what happened next:
“Garrett was surfing our backyard with our 5yr old, Cali. Little Cali was on an awesome ‘jackpot’ wave when he surfed right next to a SHARK!!
“Garrett didn’t believe Cali at first because it’s very rare to see sharks so close to shore behind our house but then our neighbor yelled to them: ‘I just saw a shark near you!’ You can see in this video that when Garrett realizes there is truly a shark nearby he does his best to stay calm (after letting out a nervous laugh;) and keep Cali calm as he paddles them both out of the area and then back to shore.
“Our family loves sharks but this situation seemed out of the ordinary and out of Garrett’s control. As soon as they were safely out of the water Garrett and Cali checked back from a ledge above and in fact saw the shark swimming below.”
Spooky stuff. But we’re glad everyone’s okay.
