Being a surfer on the east coast during the summer months sucks.
Hot, humid, and (mostly) flat, June through August is a brutal time to be stuck anywhere between Maine and Miami.
September, however, is a different story.
Like clockwork, the 2023 hurricane season kicked into high gear right around labor day weekend, and with back-to-back-to-back storms pin-balling around in the Atlantic, the waves were basically firing for a month straight.
Talk about respite after a long, flat summer.
During Hurricane Lee, Ian Crane and Timo Simmers flew east to meet Robbie McCormick, Cory and Luke Lopez, and Brett Barley for a good ole east coast strike mission all throughout New York and North Carolina.
“Every surfer’s dream is to score a hurricane swell with their friends,” says O’Neill in the description alongside their latest in the ongoing “Strike Missions” series. “No matter what level of surfing you are at, there is always going to be that thought in the back of your mind. The thought of traveling across the country, or sometimes the world, to catch a specific swell in a specific area that will likely only last a few days. A swell that may be the first and last of its kind. Hard to say whether or not Hurricane Lee will be the last of its kind, but it showed up big time. Lucky for us, the boys were there to capitalize.”
Hit play to watch Hurricane Lee roll out the red carpet for Crane and co.
