Albee Layer’s been on the frontlines of paddle surfing at Jaws for a decade.
Layer’s so committed to massive Jaws that he actually forfeited his spot in The Eddie on Oahu a few years back so that he could chase the barrel of his life on Maui. His decision, while controversial, paid off big time when he packed one of the wildest Jaws tubes ever that day.
In the years since Layer’s battled various injuries that have kept him from full strength. While he’s still been a force out at Peah’i, he’ll be the first to admit he hasn’t been able to push himself the way he’d like.
This winter, he’s looking to make up for lost time, and he’s started his 2023/2024 season off with a bang by catching this October bomb.
“Special one first thing this morning,” Layer writes on instagram. “I have some very wild goals for this year and in general but they feel a little more doable after days like this. After watching @camzink and rest of the crew at rampage this year (had to use same song cam!) I definitely went in to this swell in a different head space that I hope to keep all year. Helluva start.”
A healthy Layer in a good headspace is a dangerous combination. With El Nino looking to kick the Pacific into high gear, we can’t wait to watch Layer accomplish his lofty goals in XXL surf at the world’s heaviest slabs. The thought is actually scary.
But, like Peter Mel writes on his post, “You are a madman!! Never change!”
