Pipeline’s been firing on all cylinders since it woke up from its summer slumber in mid October.
The first big well of the season hit on a “big Wednesday” that was also John John Florence’s birthday. Naturally, he and brother Nathan Florence scored “huge and unruly” Pipe while lifeguards saved over 15 people from big wave doom.
But some of the world’s best surfers have been getting their asses kicked at Pipeline this season. Koa Rothman also released footage of the usual North Shore ripper crew enduring “chaos and carnage” at Pipeline and Jamie O’Brien’s also took some beatings.
The latest surfer to pay his dues at Pipe is WSL commentators and former pro, Strider Wasilewski who got tricks and a treat from Pipeline on Halloween.
He captioned the post above:
“Little deep, hahaha… but at pipeline once you commit you better send it or you will lose your spot in the line up! This one is for the groms watching in the channel…”
The clip shows Strider paddling into a monster wave at super crowded Pipe. He pulls in, a grom claims it for him, and then he just gets eaten by the wave and busts his ear drum.
Pro surfer Balaram Stack wrote: “Wayyy behind the boil”
Strider responded: “Little too far, I needed to start pumping.”
Someone asked him to “can you describe the dismount / inside that beast”
He said: “I just ride until floor drops out and fall forward usually… just didn’t get my arm out and slapped the water with my head”
Ouch.
Yesterday, Strider followed up with another post showing the view of the wave from land below.
He captioned it:
“Halloween Hangover cure… here’s the land angle from the previous Pipeline post! Result, broken ear drum. Was it worth it, 100%! Riding a 7’0” retro gun”
