Sharks are something that are always on surfers’ minds.
Whether it’s lurking beneath them as they’re sitting in the lineup, or avoiding certain spots due to past sightings, encounters, or attacks…sharks are a constant.
But, with a perspective shift, sharks and surfers could have a more copacetic connection – like, what about from a surfboard design standpoint? Sharks are, in fact, evolutionarily designed to move through the water with speed, precision, and poise.
So, in a cryptic post – as he’s known to do – Slater teased a new surfboard from Slater Designs, which appears to mimic the movements of a shark.
Of course, Slater’s had his hand in a few different businesses over the years:
There’s been surfboards (Slater Designs), traction pads (K-Grip), organic energy drinks (Purps), wavepools (Kelly Slater Wave Co.) and clothing brands (Outerknown).
But back to this board…
The social media post, artfully doused in black in white, shows close-ups of a Slater’s mug, images of a new board, then juxtaposed with the movements of a shark.
They look…quite similar. Maybe a twin fin, too?
According to National Geographic:
“Great white sharks are torpedo-shaped with powerful tails that can propel them through the water at up to 35 miles per hour. This speed and a bite force of up to 1.8 metric tons allows the shark to quickly inflict massive trauma on their prey, disabling their target and thus protecting against a counterattack.”
Sounds like that might be pretty good for a surfboard, no?
