In the words of Mugatu, surfing is “so hot right now.”
And it has been for a long time since it evolved from a subculture stereotypically reserved for adrenaline junkies à la Point Break, and Wilbur Kookmeyer-esque stoners from Fast Times to something for everyone.
And that means crowds. Big, fat, thick crowds as shown in the video below.
The edit above comes from California-based surf videographer, Brad Jacobson. It’s a baffling compilation of stunning kook moments that’s like a trainwreck you can’t look away from.
It’s non-stop drop-ins, collisions, wipeouts, and pure kookery that’ll leave you wondering if surfing’s cardinal rule of “never drop-in” is even a thing anymore.
These people clearly missed the memo.
Jacobson captioned it:
“Navigating the sea of humanity.
“Brace yourself as I share with you the ultimate surfing collision compilation. Surfers find themselves on unexpected collision courses and near misses.
“Thanks for watching and please subscribe! I’m Brad Jacobson and I’ll sea ya on the sand.”
Press play above for some mind-boggling entertainment.
As to be expected, the comments section was on fire. See for yourself:
“That’s sad to see. I remember the old days when crowds were rare.”
“I love the guy who checked 3 times before knocking the bozo off his wave.”
“Surfing Malibu with anything else in mind is like going to In-N-Out and wondering why the sudden rush on cheeseburgers.”
“The dude giving the others the finger…. Priceless “
“I was listening to an interview of Nat Young on The Surfers Journal today. At the end of the interview he was asked to give a closing statement. He stated emphatically that there are just too many surfers now. This video only proves his point.”
