Surfers have a fascination with making claims.
The biggest wave, the best trick. The longest barrel. The worst wipeout. Surfing seven seas in seven days.
Then there’s the first perfect 10 scored by a woman at Pipe. The biggest wave ever sponged. The oldest surfer in the world. And now, a minute-long wave at Mavericks.

The footage was posted by the Mavericks Awards, a digital video performance contest in which big-wave surfers and videographers submit their best surf content from Mavericks from the entire winter season.
The video is captioned:
“Watch the GOAT, Peter Mel, surf a long ride at Mavericks this morning for over one minute on his feet.
“Filmed 3.11.2024 The Mavericks Awards is a digital video performance contest in which big wave surfers and videographers submit their best surf content from Mavericks from the entire winter season.
“Founded by Jeff Clark and Chris Cuvelier, our mission is to celebrate Mavericks and the brave men and women that surf it. Our values of respect, inclusion, equality, safety and environmental stewardship guide all our decisions and how we operate the Mavericks Awards.”
The video shows Mel, legendary Mavericks surfer with decades of experience, scoring a minute-long wave. While much of the Mavericks footage we see is close-up and shot from the water, this is different.
Ove viewer had an interesting take on the video and pointed out:
“Finally, a shot that shows the whole setup there. That wave can peel to the breakwater on the right conditions. Best ride I’ve seen recorded there.”
