In case you haven’t heard, there’s a solar eclipse coming.
The path of totality will streak across the continental United States on Monday, April 8th, and hordes of people are flocking to locations for the cosmic phenomenon.
And while many Americans will see a partial eclipse wherever they are, only those in the path of totality will get the full-on experience. But even fewer will be doing something far more special when the sun goes dark and things get weird – surfing.
As it happens, there’s only one surf spot in the continental US of A that falls under the path of totality. And it’s not on the coast. Waco, Texas – home to Waco Surf (née BSR Cable Park) – will see a total eclipse on April 8th, and surfers will be in the water.
Per their socials, it looks like Waco Surf is having a sweepstakes for the coveted totality time slot. Captioning the announcement, they wrote:
“Buy a session on April 8th and go in the running to win a spot in the 1-2pm Eclipse Session and shred while you take in this natural phenomenon…A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY.”
And with totality only lasting a couple minutes – from 1:40pm to 1:44pm Texas time – there will only be a handful of surfers actually riding a wave during the rare solar event.
Elsewhere, in Mazatlan, Mexico, the path of totality will be on the coast, so surfers will have the chance to catch a wave during the event down there.
But in the states, it’s only Waco.
And the next solar eclipse in the US won’t be until 2044. That one, too, will be across landlocked states. Maybe there’ll be more wavepools then? Probably.
