Beers, bratwurst, and…barrels?
The Bavarian capital of Munich, Germany is home to many things – from ancient castles, to sprawling museums, to the annual Oktoberfest celebration – and soon, it will also feature a world-class wave pool with Endless Surf’s o2 SURFTOWN MUC.
Now, above, we have a first look at the goods. Footage released from Endless Surf on Tuesday, May 14th shows the first waves breaking (and barreling) in the pool.
“Seeing our first waves roll out across the lagoon is a special moment, and we are so stoked to be making our global debut alongside o2 SURFTOWN MUC,” a statement reads. “Years of hard work and dedication by our visionary wave engineers are coming to reality and we could not be more proud to play our part in bringing world-class waves to this impressive surf venue.”
Although the waves may look familiar – akin to American Wave Machines seen at Waco Surf in Texas, Boa Vista in Brazil, and Shizunami in Japan – Endless Surf is an entirely separate entity, and the tubes in Germany are the first iteration of their tech in the wild.
Per Endless Surf: “Our pneumatic wave technology is the most reliable and long-lasting on the market. Paired with our Swell Studio technology, we’re able to deliver customizable, ocean-quality waves for all skills. With the ability to program waves section by section, Endless Surf is capable of piecing together sought-after combo waves to elevate training (i.e. barrel + turn section + air section etc.)”
For obvious reasons, Germany is not typically known as a surfing destination. However, two German surfers will be representing Deutschland in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics – Tim Elter and Camilla Kemp. And with a new pool, in addition to the OG Munich surf spot, the Eisbach River, perhaps Germany’s surfing future is brighter than one might expect.

So, back to the pool; when can folks surf it?
Right now, o2 SURFTOWN MUC is still in the testing phase, working out the kinks, and dialing in their wave customization settings. Once that phase concludes, they anticipate a “grand opening this summer, when they will officially open to the public.”
