Coxos, in Portugal, has many moods. On small days, it’s a roping right pointbreak with the odd tube section. But, unlike most points that max out at a certain size, Coxos can handle big swell. Rather than closeout, the takeoff simply moves up the reef to an outer ledge, and the whole thing morphs into one of Portugal’s premiere slabs.
In the edit above, Portuguese tube-hound Nic von Rupp rolls out the red carpet for his friend Freddie Meadows from Sweden, and Jack Underkofler from the “Dead Poets Society” rock band, during one of the days of the year. Talk about being in the right place at exactly the right time.
While Underkofler is happy watching from the beach, Meadows and von Rupp jump off the rocks and straight into a super session with Tiago Pires, Alex Botelho, Kiron Jabour, and more. Von Rupp’s first wave (2:56) is a double-slab screamer, and one of the best we’ve ever seen out there. When von Rupp claims a wave, you know it was special.
Can you imagine starting a session like that?
