A barrage of waves recently slammed into Sumatra, officially kicking off swell season in the region. Given the quality and consistency of Indonesia, surfers could enjoy more barrels than Bintang from Nias to Grajagan this week. And just offshore of Keramajat Island, the frequented Kandui left lit up like a theater marquee. There were plenty of attendees punching their tickets for the show.
Is there anything better in surfing than pumping full speed underneath section after section? Luke Swanson, easily one of the standouts in this video, demonstrated this truth repeatedly at Kandui. Hailing from the North Shore of Oahu, Swanson has become renowned for his aerial antics honed at Rocky Point, but he’s freaky good at frontside tubes. He first immaculately threads a left 1:32 then gets a few more head-scratchers.

Raphael “Rapha” Castro, a longtime standout in the Mentawais, pig-dogged his way to multiple keepers on a 6’2” Arakawa Rounded Pin. He’s a tube pig of the highest order in these parts and spends four months hunting waves in the Ments.
Despite most people’s aversion to surfing in crowds, with walls like this stretching through the lineup, you can understand the headcount. The West Coast of North America is particularly wave-starved at the moment, and we’re inclined to join the seasonal migration to indulge in the Indian Ocean.
