Mason Ho’s signature tube stance could be mistaken for a yoga pose. Oftentimes when he finds himself backside in a barrel, the Hawaiian looks like he’s stretching when he switches hands while grabbing his outside rail in the tube. He’ll do it at XL Pipeline, and he did it repeatedly on a trip to the Surf Ranch for the fifth installment of the Snapt movie franchise.
Snapt5: The Final Cut, directed by the inimitable Logan “Chucky” Dulien, is set to release sometime in the summer of 2025. Typically, Logan’s flicks use unseen, never-before-seen footage, meaning surfers keep clips on ice for a while. A rarity in today’s internet-first age. So if these are essentially the B-clips, you know the content they’re holding will be worth the wait.
At the Surf Ranch, Mason and Ian Crane go tit-for-tat with creative stalls and approaches into the man-made wave. If there’s a place to tinker with technique in the tube, Lemoore is it. Just like the surfers, the filmers used an unorthodox technique by planting themselves on the ski and tracking surfers with a wide-angle lens. Contributing lensmen include Robbie Crawford, Nathan Baker, Rory Pringle and Kalani Cummings.
This video also includes smooth wraps from Taro Watanabe. Taro’s middle name is Kelly Slater (It’s true!) so it’s only fair he gets some time to thrash in the GOAT’s pond.
Enjoy all three surfers getting shacked over crystal clear freshwater, and see if you can use these moves in your next session.
