With all due respect to “Greatest Aussie Sporting Moments,” “Cody Simpson’s Golden Dream,” and “An Inside Look at the First Luxury Olympics,” the latest GQ Australia issue belongs to Ethan Ewing and Jack Robinson.
Respectively ranked No. 2 and 4 in the world, Ewing and Robinson graced the cover of The Sport Issue, which is available in print exclusively in The Australian on Friday, June 14. The two get adorned in designer garb – from Gucci denim pants to Prada shirts and Dior jackets. At one point, Robinson sports a stainless steel and ceramic Superocean Automatic 42 watch by Breitling. Classy stuff.
The feature, written by Charlie Calver, gives an overview of their careers and teases their upcoming appearance representing Australia in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Calver reviews their experience at Teahupo’o, namely Robinson’s CT win over Gabriel Medina in 2023 and Ewing’s back-breaker on the reef less than a week before that event.

“I got my last wave and I thought I was in a good position, but I was a bit too deep,” Ewing told GQ. “I ended up getting on the foam ball and I thought I was just going to drop down and be fine, but it sucked me over and then just sent me straight to the reef. I hit so hard it felt like I didn’t even go through water and it just jolted through my whole back. I knew I did something. It was super scary because my whole back was numb and aching down my leg.”
Both talk about the upbringing that shaped them and the desire to succeed on their terms. Robinson talked about his goals of winning a world title (and an Olympic medal) and the pressure that comes with being hailed as a child prodigy.

“It came with its challenges, for sure, once you get sponsored and once you have all the expectations on your shoulders,” he said.“It’s really funny, the love of the sport at that age brings you to all these places and now I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to bring that love back for it.’”
Speaking of love, the Aussies weren’t the only high-profile talents from the surf sphere to be featured in a fashion and lifestyle magazine. Kelly Slater and Kalani Miller were wholesomely featured in the Icons edition of Vogue Living Netherlands.

The images were taken near their property on the North Shore of Oahu, which Vogue comically undersells as their “wooden beach shack.” With the couple expecting a baby boy any day now, both look at ease on the North Shore with Miller wearing a floral dress and Slater rocking Outerknown boardshorts.
And in what might be a Vogue first, they also get to bodysurf a few waves at Ehukai. Iconic indeed.
