When it comes to your surfboard, lighter is always better. (Well, unless we’re talking big wave boards, but that’s another story.) There’s nothing worse than picking up a new performance blade and having it feel heavy under your arm. From foam to fins, surfers and shapers are always trying to save a fraction of an ounce.
With that in mind, Firewire just released a brand new fin, called the “Velox”.
According to the presser, “the Velox Fin Set excels in open faces and long lines, in waves knee-high to well-overhead. This template has a beveled edge in the leading foil of the fins, supporting immediate disruption of water flow and an elevated sense of stability in all maneuvers…
“With a core engineered from high density polymer overlayed with carbon veils, the Velox Fin Set has an unmatched mix of flex and strength enabling controlled spring and rebound in turns, and additional control above other fin building methods. An extremely light set of fins, the Velox template adds minimal weight to all shapes.”
OK, enough with the tech talk. How does the Velox perform?
Firewire sponsors Kevin Schulz, and while he’s paid to speak highly of their products, actions speak louder than words, and there’s no way to sugarcoat Schulz’s surfing. A great surfer and a great tester, Schulz has a unique way of reviewing his sponsors products without coming across as overly biased or disingenuous.
“First session done and dusted on the new Velox fins,” says Schulz straight out of the water after shredding Trestles. “At first I thought they would be really stiff, just based on the flex through the tip, but it had way more twinge than I expected. They had a lot of liveliness, and they felt really maneuverable…”
