Some years Skeleton Bay lies dormant. Just a huge, wind-whipped sandbar jutting out into the Atlantic, beckoning for a swell. Other years, storm after storm aim their energy straight at Namibia, lighting up the point with minutes-long tubes that peel for miles. Like something out a cartoon, except better.
Last year was one of those special years.
In fact, Skeleton Bay broke so often in 2023 that after the dust settled on the season, Alan Van Gysen and Pete Beukes were sitting on 10-minutes worth of clips that hadn’t seen the light of day. Rather than let them rot on a hard drive, they pieced together this mesmerizing edit.
“A collection of (mostly) unseen raw clips from the best swell of 2023 at the longest barrel in the world,” writes Now Now Media alongside this edit. “Featuring Mikey February, Jordy Maree, Nadia Erostarbe and others. Enjoy this mash-up of angles and waves from Africa’s finest sandspit.”
While none of this is new, does that really matter? We’ll never get tired of watching the best wave in the world on a 10/10 day. Consider this an appetizer for what’s to come: We’re entering the peak of Skeleton Bay season, and you just know the point is primed and ready to spin up more where this came from.
