Bay Area surfers: there’s a special treat coming your way. Not talking about west swells groomed by indian summer offshores (although that should be inbound soon!). No, this is about the first-ever Ocean Beach Surf Film Festival, which is happening at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco from September 13-15. Tickets can be bought online here.
Organizers from Mollusk Surf Shop, CinemaSF and Tunnel Records have curated a selection of classic and contemporary surf films that will be played on the big screen in mid-September. There’s surfing original blockbuster, The Endless Summer, Hollywood’s star-laden swing in Point Break, and some serious CT-level shredding in Trilogy: New Wave. There are also learning opportunities in the form of the Sanctuary Sharks of the Deep by Rogue Shark Lab and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
Summer is winding down on the West Coast. Wash it off with some quality surf cinema.

Friday, September 13
The Endless Summer (1966) on original Technicolor 16 millimeter film, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Trilogy: New Wave (featuring Griffin Colapinto, Ethan Ewing and Seth Moniz) at 7 p.m.
Saturday, September 14
Thomas Campbell’s The Seeding with live narration by Thomas Campbell and live musical score by Tommy Guerrero, 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Point Break (1991, featuring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze ) at noon
Educational presentation of Sanctuary Sharks of the Deep by Rogue Shark Lab and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association at 1 p.m.
North Shore (1987) at 2 p.m.
Sunday, September 15
Live outdoor music by The Mermen on Balboa Street (between 37th and 38th Avenues), from noon to 5 pm.
Free Screenings of local surf filmmakers featuring Gaby Scot, Jack Boston, Paul Overstrom and many others from noon to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, shorts and episodes of Dylan Graves’ Weird Waves will play simultaneously on another screen.
Grant Washburn will premiere Chasing Big Waves at 6 p.m. The film features footage from Mavericks past and present. Afterward, Washburn will be part of a moderated discussion with multiple generations of big-wave surfers.
