Ryan Burch has come a long way since he and Cyrus Sutton purposely slashed their budgets and roughed around North County San Diego in the 2010 film Stoked and Broke. More than a decade later Burch’s unique handshapes, with an emphasis on pickleforks and asymetricals, are some of the most sought-after boards on the market. Stephanie Gilmore and Mikey Wright are among a few practitioners.
But during his evolution as a board builder, Burch has stayed true to one variable, his fins. On his asymmetrical shapes specifically, he’s refined the True Ames template over years of surfing at home and abroad. This week True Ames released Burch’s fin package to the market: An asym and twin setup. To announce the release, the company released a video with some insightful board-building philosophy from Burch, paired with some of his stellar clips.
“Every time I would switch fins out and try different templates I wasn’t too into them because I just felt like I found something that really worked with the asym design,” Burch said. We’ll let Burch take it from here in the video. Here’s the description from True Ames on how the two fin setups work:
The twin set is a true all-around hybrid style design which harnesses speed and drive without sacrificing responsiveness and maneuverability. The twin offers the full ability to surf rail to rail and execute both tight radius turns in the pocket as well as searing carves on a steep wave face. This template bridges the gap between a more upright high-aspect twin and a traditional larger profile keel, and subsequently draws on many of the biggest positive performance aspects from both.
The 1+2 asym set pairs the twin with two, smaller paddle-style fins which perfectly sync to transition from nuggety toe side bottom turns to open and free top turns with just the right amount of hold, and release when necessary.
