It ain’t easy (or cheap) making a surf film. Much less a 17-minute feature with A+ talent like the Gudauskas brothers, Chris Ward, Bobby Martinez, Yadin Nicol, and more.
Yet “Sunburn”, from Alex Kilauano, is a true labor of love.
“We toured a different version of this film last year in 2023,” says Kilauano. “Tanner and I released the original film on his channel with the amazing score by Nudie Records. I love the edit. But this edit here is the original — the edit I had no plans of sharing with anyone. I didn’t own the music, and I don’t even know the process of trying to license a Beastie Boys song haha, so to me this was a really epic rough cut.
“We showed this edit at Juneshine and La Paloma, but changed the music once we put it online. I wanted to share this one now because this is what I originally cut the action to, and I love the creative process. And if I could watch a rough edit of “Thicker Than Water”, I’d personally watch that over and over. Hope you like the edit, it was made in the spirit of having fun and making things with your friends.”
As you’ll see, this isn’t some half baked film. “Sunburn” features creative stop action, a unique soundtrack, and some of the best waves and days from the Golden State and Hawaii in 2023. It’s rad to see people making things just for the love of making them. Credit Kilauano and the Gudasukas bros for creating something this cool and then releasing it online for free. The best way to support them is now is by watching.
