A 58-year-old Santa Cruz man was arrested by law enforcement last month after an alleged stabbing in the parking lot above the Hook, according to multiple reports.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call at 10 a.m. on April 27 about a possible stabbing near the Hook parking lot on East Cliff. The officers interviewed several witnesses who said “two men approached another man in a confrontation about surf etiquette,” according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
The outlet reported that, “A spokesperson for the law enforcement agency told the Sentinel that after a brief verbal back and forth, a man later identified as 58-year-old Shannon Stanger allegedly struck the victim with an object determined to be a kubotan. Kubotans are often the size and shape of a pen, but are equipped with a sharp tip in place of a ball point. They typically double as both a self-defense weapon and keychain.”

No significant injuries were reported from the incident. However, the victim sought medical treatment later, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Later that day, deputies found and arrested Stanger near the Hook. He was booked on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He was later released on bail and has a preliminary hearing on May 29, according to the Sentinel. The local news outlet accessed the Santa Cruz County Superior Court website to view Stanger’s previous domestic violence restraining orders filed against him in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
