When he’s not acting, directing, or setting fashion trends, Jonah Hill likes to surf.
The 39-year-old actor, and brand-new dad, has been spotted surfing Malibu and other Los Angeles surf spots countless times, in addition to frequently posting photos of himself riding waves on his (currently inactive) Instagram page.
But a new clip shows Jonah breaking one of surfing’s biggest faux pas.
The video, posted by the always-entertaining KookOfTheDay, sees 14-year-old Los Angeles surfer Cormac “Cove” O’Brien paddling his longboard into a wave, and riding undisturbed. Then Jonah (allegedly; hard to tell precisely in the clip) drops in from the shoulder, rides on his belly, and effectively snakes the wave.
That’s a no-no. But everyone makes mistakes from time to time.
Captioning the video, they wrote:
“Being the kook of the day can happen to the best of us! Even Jonah Hill! Seen here snaking @cormaccove maybe Jonah slipped? Or those stupid Ryan Lovelace boards he rides”
For the most part, it was a harmless breach of surf etiquette. Nobody was hurt; the wave was mediocre. And a majority of commenters on the video agreed:
“I met him once a couple years ago surfing near Malibu. We had a good convo and he was chill, genuine, and normal guy. Everyone kooks now and again.”
“He’s an amazing human being! He donated 8 brand new Surfboards to my nonprofit organization here in Rockaway Beach NYC and didn’t want any credit!”
“Pretty sure Jonah yelled ‘so sorry…’ in a funny way like his good movies.”
While Jonah’s surfing career is fairly new, he’s been pretty dedicated to learning and enjoying the sport…despite pushback from some surfers. After a sticker was spotted at San Onofre, which read “Jonah Hill Ruined Surfing,” the actor replied: “I will never stop doing things that make me happy no matter how insecure my happiness makes you.”
And back in 2019, when he allegedly started surfing for the first time, he wrote:
“Been terrified to surf my whole life. Totally random fear and at the same time always been a secret dream of mine. Turned out to be one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had.”
Cowabunga, Jonah.
