Two days ago Jp Azevedo punched a woman named Sara Taylor while the two were out surfing in Bali. The awful situation only escalated on the beach, where Azevedo and his friend were caught on video further attacking Taylor and her filmer.

The viral clip has been denounced worldwide, with everyone from Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, Gabriel Medina and Filipe Toledo standing up for Taylor. Azevedo’s ultimate punishment for the cowardice battery is still unknown, though Indonesian authorities are after him now. At the very least, we’re hearing he’ll be deported from the country.
Azevedo attempted to issue an apology, telling G1 Global news: “This girl looked like a man, I didn’t know she was a woman. She surfed like a man, dressed like a man. She was riding everyone’s wave, not respecting anyone. She went with my friend’s wave and pushed my friend out of the loop.”
Already shaky from the start, as if it would somehow be acceptable to sucker-punch Taylor if she were a man, his apology looks much, much worse now that his former girlfriend, Carol Braga, spoke out against him. Braga took to Instagram yesterday to post horrific images of an assault at the hands of Azevedo while the two were dating.

The caption reads: “Today I received some news that shocked me. They were shocked by violence, for violence against women, for violence in a sport that I consider so blessed by God. Why so much aggression? Why so much discord?
“I dated JP Azevedo in 2018 and 2019. We ended it when he assaulted me hard. Ended up in hospital with head trauma I was so ashamed of everything and especially of my daughter who I love so much. Anyway, I ended up isolating myself for almost 3 months in an inn in Rio, until the physical marks come out. But those of the heart… those still hold on. Very difficult all of this…even bc I loved him…
“Today, after such news, I decided to speak out and expose myself. Don’t know if I’m doing it right. Forgive me daughter if you don’t like it. I wish for more peace in the world.”
Braga’s Instagram received much love and support from the surf world, Filipe Toledo writing: “He can’t escape it! God bless you and all the women who are in this danger!”
Stay posted. We’ll provide further updates on Azevedo whenever they become available.
