We’re halfway through the World Surf League’s 2023 Championship Tour.
The Margaret River Pro is wrapped (congrats Gabriel Medina and Carissa Moore) and things are going to look a bit different moving forward – read: the Mid-Season Cut is now decided. But before we head to the Surf Ranch for stop number six, let’s looks at some Margs highlights. Check out the top five moments below.
Captioning this West Oz highlight reel, the WSL wrote:
“The Australian leg is wrapped. Relive the Top 5 moments that made the Western Australia Margaret River Pro and Mid-season Cut a defining event. Italo’s aerial assault seeing him through the cut, Griffin Colapinto taking down the best at Main Break John John Florence in a head-to-head Semifinal clash, backhand heroics from Gabriel Medina making history, and Carissa Moore’s buzzer-beating barrel to solidify her Semifinal spot and onward to a 27th CT victory.”
It was a defining event, indeed.
Jack Robbo, West Oz’s prodigal son, was absent. Gabriel Medina made a late-season push for a potential World Title drive, winning the event. John John Florence, a perennial favorite at Margs, shockingly went down to an in-form Griffin Colapinto. Carissa Moore solidified her dominance, edging out Tyler Wright. And lots of surfers were axed from the Tour, courtesy of the Mid-Season Cut.
And sadly, we did not see any competition held at The Box.
Maybe next year.
For now, it’s off to Cow Country, California and the one-and-only wavepool stop on Tour, the Surf Ranch Pro. Stay tuned for that, coming May 27th and 28th.
