The Newport Beach Wedge is a man-made miracle. While the jetty wasn’t built with surfers in mind, the byproduct of its construction is a wild wave that’s three times the size of anywhere else in town.
Lesser-known is the shorebreak called Cylinders just down the beach. And for good reason: It’s shallower, less makeable, and it breaks in about 6-inches of water. It’s a heavy wave with real consequence, which is why it’s usually uncrowded, despite the hoards of surfers battling 100 yards over at The Wedge.
Newport Beach’s Ty Burgess is one of a handful of surfers that hunt Cylinders when it’s on. We just hope he has a good chiropractor — a session at Cylinders nearly guarantees a concussion and/or whiplash.
