Lee Wilson was once the premier Balinese surfing prospect.
Half Indonesian, half Balinese, Wilson exuded style. Boned out airs at Keramas, nonchalance in the tube backside, and an on-land persona that screamed marketability.
These days, however, surfing is more of a pastime for Wilson. Don’t be fooled, he still rips. But he’s a dad, and he’s got a successful art career, too – think Gaugin meets Picasso meets Hockney kind of deal. It’s rad stuff and you should check it out.
While surfing recently, Wilson took a spill attempting an air on a one-foot wave. He broke his femur, tragically. More time to work on that art?
In a social media post, he wrote:
“Sending my love and deepest appreciation to those who responded first and got me to safety. From the moment I snapped my leg, to waiting in the emergency room, to waking up clean in a robe post surgery. You guys helped me with everything I needed and I never had to wait in pain, alone. Big big kisses and hugs to my daughter who stayed by side from the moment she arrived until I was wheeled out. Now it’s time for me to be still and let the bone fuse back together”
For more context, he also added a handwritten IG Story explaining the incident further:
“It was a one-foot wave, with a 50 cm section,” he wrote. “I attempted the smallest ever I have ever done, slipped off, both legs lock in the sand, one gives way.”
In the comments, the surf world wished him well:
“Damn dude do it surfing?” asked Dane Reynolds.
To which Lee replied: “yes G.”
“BRO. That the femur yeah? How high was the air?” – Cheyne Magnusson
“Ouch! Heal up strong Mate!” – Luke Egan
“Heal up fast man.” – Jack Freestone
“Get well soon Lee” – Yago Dora
“Stay strong brother” – Michel Bourez
A speedy recovery, and well wishes, indeed for this Bali surf legend.
