The Black Friday swell that blew through Maui and Oahu and had big wave surfers charging Jaws and the North Shore has been stealing the spotlight in the surfing world for over a week.
But let’s not forget about other big wave spots. Like Tasmania’s Shipstern Bluff, for example.
Surfer of the Year Nathan Florence managed to pay homage to Shipsterns, where he survived a “10-foot mutant slab” last summer, in his vlog the other day despite being in the middle of his bomb-riding fest in Hawaii.
A couple of days ago Florence dropped the edit above and captioned it:
“POV Raw Clips Towing and Paddling Shipsterns”
It’s almost 15 minutes of raw footage shot from the lineup at Shipsterns. But viewers beware, there’s not a ton of actual wave riding in it. But it does offer a unique view of the overall setup and experience.
Maybe Florence’s crew is holding onto some mental surfing footage from Shipsterns to release sometime soon. Time will tell.
Viewers were stoked. Check out a few comments below:
“So sick Nathan, that step is crazy”
“Love the contrast of seeing paddle vs. tow on this absolutely psycho wave. So well surfed Nate!!!
“Insane! That’s such a hectic-looking wave that’s tough to judge. Interested to see how the reef looks underneath”
“Shipstern – where the ocean folds itself in half. Crazy heavy wave, with a step for good measure”
“Seeing all that water draining off the huge shelf gives me the heebie-jeebies, I appreciate the way you stick your camera over the lip of the empty ones so we can do that stuff!”
