The North Shore’s Nathan Florence and Koa Rothman have been busy.
Summer was non-stop travel for both of them, which ended in an injury for Rothman. Florence kept Slab Tour going and was awarded Surfer of the Year and Wave of the Year in October at the New Big Wave Awards in Nazaré, Portugal.
Since winter kicked off, Florence and Rothman both scored giant barrels during October’s massive swell and last week’s historic Black Friday swell that fueled North Shore’s outer reefs and Maui’s Jaws.
So it’s understandable that they’ve been too busy in the water to produce many podcasts. But last night, they dropped their first vlog in a month.
The podcast above is captioned:
“@NathanFlorence @KoaRothman talk about things check it out! hahaha we love you.”
“Can a viral video get you sponsors? Nate wins Big Wave Awards!”
Florence opens the video:
“We’re on the topic of viral videos here.”
Rothman chimes in:
“Did you guys know that people just post the same video over and over and over and over and over and over again on Instagram and just wait for one to go viral?
“It’s so strange,” Florence says.
From there, they talk story for almost an hour about everything from massive waves to scary wipeouts and Rothman’s adventures in clothing production.
Press play above for some great conversation and a lot of insight into big-wave surfing.
Viewers loved it and one offered up the advice below:
“Guys, change the description of the video. This stuff you are talking about is serious, it shows the professionalism and the technical abilities, both mental and physical that are needed to survive in big waves. Kudos to you both.”
