Yesterday, we posted a hilarious edit from the Chapter 11 crew announcing the latest and greatest model from Channel Islands: The Dumpster Diver 2. While the concept and clip was well executed, it didn’t actually give us any insight into the new model.
That’s what this is for:
“I came home from a trip, and the waves were gonna be small for Lowers [during the CT stop],” says Reynolds. “Back then, it was like: I don’t know if it was a rumor or if it was true, but the judges wouldn’t give you scores if you were on a fishy board. So, we basically placed a shortboard nose on the front end of a fish, and that became the Dumpster Diver.
“After revisiting it recently, the original DD felt really small. So, I had the idea of ordering a DD two inches longer, and modernizing the nose a bit more. I really liked it, but then I had the idea of re-working the curve here [in the tail], as well….
“The whole idea was to get the rocker and curve to work together, so that’s why we added a longer and straighter line. I really like it. It feels to me like a board with more range, and I’ve been really liking it in California conditions.”
Reynolds goes on to break down a set of fiberglass fins he’s created specifically for this board, While Eithan Osborne, Cam Richards, and more prove the new model works in a variety of conditions — from west coast mush to north shore juice.
The OG DD was one of CI’s most successful surfboard models ever. And from the looks of it, the DD2 will share similar success.
