Competitive dog surfing.
Yes, it’s a real thing.
Long ago surfing dogs seemed like a trend that would fizzle out, but paddling pooches and duck diving dogs are a common sight at surf breaks these days.
They even have their own version of the Triple Crown. It’s called the World Dog Surfing Championships and it’s been ranking our four-legged friends since 2016.
The post above says the 2023 Dog Surfing Championships are set for Saturday, August 5, at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California. Registration closes July 24.
Skyler Henard, the surfing dog who took first place last year will be there competing to defend her title.
According to the organization’s website, the contest takes place on the California coast where the concept for the sport originated. A portion of the profits is donated to dog, surfing, and environmental non-profits.
The event offers other fun stuff like a ball-and-fetch water competition and a fashion show. There’s even a “yappy hour,” which is basically an after-party with a taco and ceviche pop-up.
In true surf contest form, the event offers different divisions based on size and weight. There’s even heats for tandem dogs and one for human and canine duos.
For surfing dogs around the world, there are virtual divisions for surfing, a fashion photo contest, a doggy fashion show contest, and even a disc, frisbee, or stick catch competition.
We bet it’ll be a doggone good time. Sorry, couldn’t help it.
