Filipe Toledo likes wavepools.
We’re speculating here, but he must…right? In the three years since the WSL introduced Championship Tour events at Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch, he’s placed second twice (2018, 2019) and first once (2021). That’s a pretty good track record. At the very least, Toledo enjoys competing in them; because every time he does, he does well.
And so, ahead of this season’s Surf Ranch Pro (May 27th-28th), Toledo tested out another wavepool – Skudin Surf, the indoor wave tank at New Jersey’s American Dream Mall.
Shocker: Toledo killed it in that pool, too.
It was an all-out airshow on the rights and lefts when Toledo came to visit Skudin Surf. And while Skudin Surf and the Surf Ranch are totally different – employing different wave-making technologies – this has to be good practice ahead of the CT’s one-and-only wavepool event.
As we saw in previous clips from Skudin Surf – from Ben Gravy, and Jacob “Zeke” Szekely – there are some new waves they’ve been testing out at the New Jersey wavepool. The waves specifically pump up the air sections on offer, and Toledo took full advantage.
So, what do we think? Toledo for the win at the 2023 Surf Ranch Pro? If you’re into betting, he’s probably a good horse to put your money on.
The Surf Ranch Pro will run May 27th-28th; keep an eye out for coverage.
