On Wednesday, tensions escalated between a surfer and a fisherman in Florida.
The incident went down at Jacksonville Beach, when a surfer, allegedly upset about a fishing line in the water, approached the fisherman on the sand. Then, the fisherman pulled a gun. And the altercation was caught on camera; see below.
Per a report from News4Jax:
“Jacksonville Beach police responded later, putting the 65-year-old angler in handcuffs. According to the incident report, which News4JAX obtained through a public records request, he had a concealed weapons permit for his handgun and claimed the surfer punched him in the nose after the two argued about fishing lines in the water.”
By the time the cops arrived, the surfer had left, so they didn’t get the other side of the story. It’s unclear if there actually was a punch thrown before the gun was drawn.
But the report noted:
“Based on the video and the uncooperativeness of the unknown surfer, (the subject) was released and continued to fish.”
No charges were filed; and according to a crime analyst from News4Jax, “this could fall under a self-defense law known as Stand Your Ground.”
Historically, there’s been tension between surfers and fishermen – as in no surfer wants to get hooked while they’re sitting in the lineup – but this is next level.
Good thing nobody got shot over a wave, or a fish.
