Madame Tussauds is a nightmarish place.
The wax museum, originally founded in 1835 and aimed at luring celebrity-obsessed tourists to locations in Las Vegas and Hollywood, features freakish renditions of actors, athletes, politicians, and musicians for viewers to gawk at with uneasy admiration.
And one figurine artist has a perfectly-deformed, moderately-discomforting rendition of Kelly Slater, misshapen face, body structure, and all, worthy of Tussauds catalogue.
Check out the Frankenstein Slater above.
It shows Kelly pulling into the tube at Pipe during the Pipeline Masters.
Now, not to take anything away from this artist and their admirable craftsmanship, but something about Slater just looks slightly…off.
Maybe it’s the misshapen head, overgrown forehead and cranium, the dead look in its eyes, the Superman-esque trapezius muscles, and the abnormally thin waistline.
But still, kudos. It’s still a commendable work of art…although slightly haunting.
Captioning a post of the model, the artist wrote:
“Japan’s Largest Diorama Contest
“I passed the preliminary round of the Hamamatsu Diorama Grand Prix to be held in Shizuoka, the holy land of models💮 I will be able to participate in the main selection to be held in August 型
“Trying 🏄 ♂️ the surfing diorama 🏄 ♂️🌊
“I’m not sure how it will be evaluated because it’s a green Kiwamono diorama, but I’ll enjoy it 🤝”
Of course, this isn’t the first statue of Slater. There’s a life-sized one in his home town of Cocoa Beach, Florida.
And let’s just say, this one’s a little bit more…um…accurate.
