On December 28th, the sleepy blue collar fishing town of Half Moon Bay, 30 miles south of San Francisco, turned into the epicenter of big-wave surfing.
Surfers from around the world descended upon Mavericks, Northern California’s premier big-wave surf spot, for the biggest swell of the year, perhaps the decade.
Folks are calling it: “one of the biggest days ever” and “the biggest and most unruly Mavericks I’ve seen.” And now, here’s the full edit from the Mavericks Surf Awards.
Captioning the video recap, the Mavericks Surf Awards elaborated:
“Watch highlights from the historic swell that slammed Half Moon Bay on December 28th, 2023. The bravest big wave surfers gathered at Mavericks on the biggest day we’ve seen in years to get a piece of the action. Big thanks to all the videographers involved in this production!”
It’s the edit of all edits, as seen from the day of days at Mavs. All the carnage and chaos, the best rides and best slams, encapsulated in one video.
So, will this day go down as a benchmark for big-wave surfing? Will folks be remembering December 28th, 2023 for years to come?
Maybe.
There’s more swell on the way.
