When we think of marine wildlife in Western Australia, it’s sharks.
Big ones. Lots of ‘em. Scary ones. Like the recent attack on a prominent West Oz surfer at a remote beach, in which he later recounted, “There was so much blood.”
But there’s other animals out there in the wild west, too; like gigantic whales.
A surfer had a heartwarming encounter with a ginormous whale and its calf recently, and it came after he had volunteered to save beached whales, suggesting perhaps the creature came by to say “thank you” for helping out.
“It was pretty surreal,” Brett Peake told 9 News Australia.
“Especially following the events that happened in the 72 hours previously. To have this magical encounter with mother nature at its absolute finest gave an ending for a pretty tough week for all involved.”
As for whether Peake was panicked or scared during the encounter?
“It’s one of those things,” he said. “We spend so much time in the water, we sorta know their movements.”
He continued:
“But when you’re sitting out in the water and you see this big dark shadow come towards you, you do second guess just in case it’s the man in the grey suit, which we do have a lot down here.
“This doesn’t happen all that often, and because it was so close to the event, I couldn’t believe it.
“Stuff like this doesn’t happen all the time. But when it does, I just couldn’t believe it. Especially when the little calf popped its head up.
“I’m pretty sure…I’m no spiritual being…but I’m pretty sure they were coming in to say ‘thanks for your help,’ and just checking in on me.”
