Between Ian Crane’s “Beach Head” and Kolohe Andino’s “2% Surf”, the grassroots surf scene in San Clemente is well and truly alive.
As it should be. After all, San Clemente is home to the most shreddable wave in America (Lower Trestles), and has more pro surfers per capita than anywhere in the States, and it’s not even close. If you’re an up-and-coming grom in SC, it’s commonplace to share the lineup with CT surfers and freesurf stars every single time you surf. Talk about iron sharpening iron.
In the latest edit from Crane’s Beach Head, Crane — alongside Andino, Crosby Colapinto, and a slew of aforementioned up-and-comers — goes absolutely loony at Lowers during a recent run of midsummer swell. If Crane isn’t the best surfer currently not on the CT, he’s gotta be close. From his fully committed bottom turns to his radical laybacks, Crane surfs with all gas, and no brakes. It’s as though Crane’s taken notes from every SC star from the past few decades and melded them all into one surfer.
