Every year in April — like clockwork — Indonesia’s surf season officially begins when a pumping swell lights the area up. While it’s never unexpected, the first swell of the new surf season is usually met with lighter-than-normal crowds.
Last weekend, when a solid shot of Indian Ocean juice slammed into Bali, pretty much everywhere went off. And with so many waves to choose from, many of them were uncrowded, like this particular slab somewhere on Bali’s East Coast. Can you imagine scoring this with only 6 friends?
In the edit above, a small group of surfers rush a shallow slab, with mixed results. The dude at :55 scores a gem, packing a Backdoor-esque right that fire-hoses him into the channel. Just behind him, his friend gets clipped on the wave of the morning just before he gets to experience the same ecstasy. It’s a game of inches out there.
With 6-months left in Indo’s surf season, expect much more where this came from.
