You know those videos? The ones with crazy people wearing those flying squirrel, wingsuit thingies as they soar treacherously close to a mountain range?
Well, if there ever was a surfing equivalent to that, Kai Lenny just pulled it off.
“We are at Uluwatu,” Kai says in the video above. “And we’re going foiling. It’s a smaller day. First day of the trip for me. And we’ve got Alex [Hayes] here, who’s a foil lord from Australia.”
The two proceed to tandem foil barely breaking waves beneath the cliffs at Uluwatu. But there’s a catch – Kai decided not to wear a leash. A potentially precarious decision he mentions before the session.
And like Chekhov’s gun, this seemingly trivial factor, which Kai casually calls out in the beginning of the video, makes an appearance during the final act.
Kai hits a piece of debris, gets knocked off his foil board, and loses it in the rocks. Luckily, he retrieved the board, and nobody was hurt.
“It was worth it,” Kai says after the session. “The whole experience of being here is to push the boundaries of ourselves. I definitely paid the price, but you don’t know the limit till you find it. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
In related Kai-Lenny-doing-crazy-stuff-on-a-foil news, he’s been close to pulling off a strapped-in double backflip.
He’s got the single flip on lock; but the double? Not quite.
But this is Kai Lenny we’re talking about. Expect a double backflip dropping soon.
