It used to be like this: a surfer (or group of surfers) goes on a trip. They score. Then months later, the public gets a glimpse at the epic surfing via surf mag or film premiere.
Simpler times.
Then came the internet. Now, practically no epic surf session goes down without it being instantaneously fed to the masses via surf sites and social media. Case in point, Nate Florence went on a heater in West Oz – like, days ago – and bam, here’s the vid.
We previously teased this session with a clip from a mutant, ungodly, nightmare of a slab that Florence manhandled. He was ultimately gobbled up by the freakish wave, but it was still a pretty incredible ride.
And now, we have the full session to feast our eyeballs on.
Out of all the slabs Florence has hit on his self-proclaimed “Slab Tour,” this one is perhaps the scariest. (How’s that high-line tube at the 4:35 mark!?) The drop looks insanely tricky, the barrel section looks like a straight-up square, and there’s shallow rocks right near the impact zone. (And Nate finds himself in a sticky situation around the 5:41 mark with said rocks; sketchy stuff.)
After this session, it looks like Nate’s Australian slab expedition is coming to an end. Where to next?
“We’re gonna chase a swell in Tahiti,” Nate says at the end of the vid. “My body is pretty beat up; I wasn’t sure if I was gonna go. It looks like it’s gonna be a psycho tow swell. This summer’s just getting started.”
Nate’s right; a psycho swell is hitting Tahiti right now. Stay tuned for action from that.
