There’s a lot to think about when it comes to buying a surfboard.
Single fin, thruster, or quad? Volume or dimensions? EPS or poly? Single or double concave? What about rocker? So many decisions.
Back up a second to that rocker. If you don’t know much about them, don’t stress about it. Luckily for surfers in the market for a new board, legendary shaper Glen Pang—who’s been shaping for T&C for over 40 years—is here to help and drops some serious rocker knowledge in the video below.
Over the weekend, T&C Surf Designs posted the video above, captioning it:
“What a SURFBOARD SHAPER with 40+ YEARS experience can teach you”
At the top of the video, Pang explains exactly what rocker is.
He keeps it simple: “Rocker is the curvature on the bottom of a surfboard.”
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Pang breaks it down with some key points:
- Boards with more rocker are slower, looser, and easier to turn.
- Boards that are flatter with less rocker are faster, easier to paddle, harder to turn, and usually for small waves.
According to Pang:
“Normally on a smaller wave, you want less rocker because you want speed. When you get to a bigger wave the waves have the speed already so you don’t need too flat of a rocker, you just want the board to fit in the curve of the wave.”
Essentially, it’s all about the water’s path which changes depending on the rocker, he says.
There’s a lot more to learn in the video, so press play above to learn a heck of a lot more from the shaping legend.
