Snagging a wave to yourself at Snapper Rocks, when it’s pumping, is a rare, special thing. The crowds are so heavy, that everyone is vying for a piece of the pie.
Not to mention, like any popular surf spot, there’s the locals to contend with, too. Sure, there’s the Micks, the Parkos, the Dingos who get any wave they want at the Superbank. But there’s countless other locals who hold down the spot, as seen in the clip below.
“Snapper Rocks is not the easiest place to score a wave if your [sic] not a regular behind the rock,” the video is captioned. “The last two weeks of good swell brought every surfers to Coolangatta trying to score the wave of their life. Many did and many got burnt by an accidental drop in. But there were a few locals who were just damn intent on taking any wave they wanted, even by force.”
By force, huh? Heavy.
There are a few pushes and nudges in the clip, but honestly it’s nothing out of the ordinary for a spot like Snapper. Drop-ins are guaranteed when surfing the Superbank in cranking conditions. And just like any other spot in the world, the locals must be respected.
However, the lineup at Snapper Rocks will have to clear out in the coming days as the first event of the World Surf League’s Challenger Series, the Boost Mobile Pro Gold Coast, is coming to town. The event window runs from May 6th – 13th.
Let’s just hope the swell sticks around.
