Shama Beckford didn’t qualify to compete at the Olympics in Tokyo, but he’s still hopeful. The qualifiers for the 2024 Olympics at Teahupo’o next summer are just around the corner.
“For me, being one of the first sponsored surfers in Jamaica, I’ve already been blessed to achieve so much,” Beckford told us in an interview a few years back. “When I first started surfing it was very humble, and just for the passion and love. I feel like I already have the cake, and it’s just extra icing on top with each new accomplishment. To represent my country and make my people proud is the biggest honor. And more than anything, I’m most grateful for the opportunity to inspire so many young kids from Jamaica. To have them look up to me is honestly the best feeling in the world.”
