The shark activity hasn’t slowed in Hawaii.
First, a 12-to-15-foot tiger shark attacked a surfer on Kauai at Hanalei Bay nearly two weeks ago; then, on Oahu’s North Shore, a visiting tourist was attacked while surfing Pua’ena Point in Haleiwa on Wednesday.
Now, there’s been more shark sightings and encounters elsewhere on Oahu.
According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser:
“Honolulu officials have issued shark advisories today [Thursday] for a surf spot known as ‘Castles’ in Waikiki and Ala Moana Beach Park surf break at ‘Courts.’
“A city alert issued at about 9:45 a.m., says a 6-foot, non-aggressive shark was observed outside of the reef at Castles. Another alert was issued shortly after noon today that a 10-foot, non-aggressive tiger shark was confirmed swimming through the surf break at Courts.”
But that wasn’t all.
Another 10-foot “aggressive” shark was spotted off Nānākuli Beach Park; warning signs were posted there, too.
“Usually we warn the whole public,” Ocean Safety Lieutenant Kyle Foyle told KHON2 about beach official protocol following a shark attack or sighting.
“We usually launch one of our jetskis that makes a patrol through the lineup to notify surfers and swimmers and beachgoers of an apparent shark attack. We also post signs, and we make patrols all the way until dark.”
Back in April, a local Mike Morita was surfing Kewalo Basin on Oahu’s South Shore when he was repeatedly attacked by an aggressive, eight-foot-long tiger shark. In that incident, he lost his right foot.
As for this recent spate of shark encounters in Hawaii, and specifically Oahu, KITV4 reports:
“This is the fourth shark advisory or warning issued in less than 24 hours, and the second on Oahu’s South Shore on Thursday.”
